What is Activated Carbon? Why RO Systems Need Pre-Filters

Introduction
Activated Carbon is the seasoned veteran of water purification, while RO systems represent the pinnacle of filtration precision. But did you know that the latter's efficiency and longevity depend heavily on the former acting as its protective "vanguard"?

1. Understanding Activated Carbon Deeply

  • What it is: A specially processed carbon with myriad microscopic pores, granting it a vast surface area.

  • How it works: Primarily through physical adsorption, acting like a magnet to "grab" molecules of residual chlorine, discoloration, odors, VOCs, etc., into its pores.

  • Core Value: Significantly improves water taste and removes chlorine, which is harmful to RO membranes.

2. Pre-Filters: The "Armor" for RO Systems
The RO membrane, though precise, is also "delicate." Pre-filters (typically PP sediment and activated carbon) provide triple protection:

  1. Physical Protection: The PP filter removes sand and rust, preventing particulate matter from scratching or clogging the RO membrane.

  2. Chemical Protection: Activated Carbon removes residual chlorine. Chlorine is a strong oxidant that can irreversibly oxidize and break down the RO membrane's polymer structure, causing it to fail.

  3. Biological Protection: Media like KDF in the pre-filter stage can inhibit microbial growth, preventing biofouling that clogs membrane pores.

Installing an RO system without effective pre-filtration is like asking a precision instrument expert to work in a sandstorm. Pre-filtration is a small investment but represents significant wisdom in protecting the core component of your RO system and ensuring long-term, stable pure water production.
