The core working principle of polyphosphate balls is slow dissolution: when water flows through them, trace amounts of polyphosphate are released. These dissolved phosphate ions chelate with hardness ions such as calcium and magnesium in the water, forming soluble complexes.

Another mechanism is lattice distortion: the polyphosphate interferes with the normal growth of calcium carbonate crystals (scale), making it difficult for hard, adherent scale to form. Instead, soft, flocculent particles are produced, which can be easily carried away by the water flow.
